Overview

Luang Prabang Nong Khiaw (Nong Kiau or Nong Kiew) is a beautiful and authentic destination on the Nam Ou shore, one of the fantastic mountainous areas north of Vang Vieng in Laos. With 11 days traveller will have great time to explore the beauty of Luang Prabang and visit the Lao Leu weaver’s village and explore a less familiar style of houses and culture on the road along the Nam Ou River in Nong Khiaw, in three hours north of Luang Prabang. In addition, they have the opportunity to take a walk through the small streams and rice paddies to reach the 100 waterfalls.

DAY 1: LUANG PRABANG ARRIVAL - CITY TOUR BY TUK TUK (D)

Arrival in Luang Prabang airport, you will be picked up then transferred to the hotel in city center and transfer you to your hotel for check-in
(Check-in time is 14.00 PM, early check-in is not included in itinerary and subject to availability). In the afternoon, your city tour with your private tuk tuk (the famous local tri-cycle) begins with a visit to the Traditional Art and Ethnology Center to learn about Laos’ many ethnic cultures. We then head to the magnificent Wat Xiengthong with its roofs sweeping low to the ground, which represents classical Laotian architecture. We still have time to visit the Royal Palace Museum, which hosts a range of interesting artifacts. If time permits, we will take a stroll around the city to visit Big Brother Mouse, which is the most famous bookshop in Laos. The next stop is Ock Pop Tock, meaning East Meets West, where you can learn about the traditional weaving in Laos. A visit to Luang Prabang would be incomplete without ascending the 329 steps to the top of Phousi Hill for a beautiful sunset view of the city and its glowing reflection on the Mekong River. The tour ends after a visit to the famous Night Market, where you can find a lovely collection of handmade textiles made by local and hill tribe people surrounding Luang Prabang. DAY 2: LUANG PRABANG – BAN XIENGMENE – TAD HOUAYKHUA (CYCLING)(B,L)

After departing at 8:30 am from your hotel, we cycle to the river bank and take a ferry to cross the mighty Mekong River to Ban Xeng Mene. We cycle off-road, exploring the area with several stops to take pictures before reaching the village of Ban Nakham. The village is popular for sugar cane and Kaolam (sticky rice and beans in bamboo), which are tasty local treats. We continue to cycle along green rice fields stopping in different villages and tribes to see to see how the locals live their daily lives. A local style lunch will be served in Ban Som. After lunch we continue cycling and pass the villages of Khmu and Lao Loum until we get to the beautiful waterfall, Tad Hoykoua (Hundred families waterfall). After enjoying a refreshing swim we will take the boat upstream back to the city center. Dinner is on your own. Overnight in Luang Prabang

DAY 3: LUANG PRABANG - LIVING AND FARM - KUANG SI WATERFALL (B, L)

Pick up at 8:00AM, we drive to Ban Phong Van about 5 km outside Luang Prabang, among lush rice fields and overlooked by wooded hills and mountains to join in a Living Rice Farm where they grow organic vegetables, salads, herbs and rice and supply leading restaurants and hotels in Luang Prabang. Coming here you will be shown how rice is grown on the farm, experience the life of a farmer and try your hand at some of the activities. Or just view it all from the comfort of traditional Lao rice house balcony, which is surrounded by rice terraces and organic vegetable farm. All the family can join in and there are great photo opportunities. After experience in the farm, we enjoy Lao specialty lunch in separate area overlooking their rice fields. We taste typical Lao dishes.
At about 2:00 pm, this adventure destination package takes you to Kuang Si Waterfall – you will have time to explore the three layered Kuang Si Waterfall walk the trails of the nature reserve and swim in the refreshing turquoise water pools and visit the bear rescue center.
Our way back into Luang Prabang we make a stop at Ban Na Uan hmong village where you have the chance to experience Hmong village life, meet some of the local people and see the makings of their traditional embroidery crafts. From here it is time to make our way into town, typically this is between 5:30pm – 6:00pm – back to your hotel. Dinner is on your own. Overnight at Luang Prabang.

DAY 4: LUANG PRABANG - MAHOUT COURSE (B, L)

After breakfast, we will transfer directly to the Elephant Village (start at 8:00 AM in the morning). On arrival at the Elephant Village Camp, welcome and greeting by our camp manager and participate in short briefing about elephants. After that we will enjoy the impressive experience of a 30 minute elephant ride on the howdah (elephant seat) or on your elephant’s neck. We then receive basic mahout training on how to control an elephant. Lunch at the Elephant Restaurant Bathe Your Elephant: Take your own elephant down to the Nam Khan River for an exhilarating bathing experience! Boat trip to the Tad Sae Waterfall: Take a traditional Lao long boat to the Tad Sae Waterfall and relax in the clear water. We then transfer back to your hotel in Luang Prabang for the overnight stay. Dinner is on your own.

DAY 5: LUANG PRABANG - NONG KHIAW WATERFALL TREK (B, L, D)

Pickup at your hotel and enjoy a scenic 3 hour drive winding along the Nam Ou River to the trail head or our Nong Khiaw trekking tour. Today’s hike will take you up along a cascading waterfall passing through pristine jungle of ferns and large trees. We recommend you to bring some shoes or sandals that can get wet as we hike our way up and through the waterfall. At the top of the waterfall, the trail flattens and passes through agricultural land on the final stretch to a large and remote Hmong village for an unforgettable homestay. Lunch will be along the way and dinner in the village. Overnight at homestay.

DAY 6: REMOTE TREKKING MOUNTAIN VILLAGE HOMESTAY (B,L,D)

After breakfast we start a hike through valleys and mountains covered with rice paddies and jungle. In the afternoon, we’ll arrive at a small Hmong village nestled into the side of a mountain and get chance to visit a homestay in a very simple house with a family who has made their living there for years. A short walk up the mountain and you can visit a village with one of the most spectacular views in the area overlooking countless mountain peaks. Spend the night with a friendly family for an authentic, welcoming, and unforgettable homestay.

DAY 7: MOUNTAIN DESCENT TO NONG KHIAW (B, L)

Today we’ll hike to the Nong Khiaw Valley from our mountaintop homestay. The hike is only 2.5-3 hours and you’ll want to take it slow to for pictures and to enjoy the spectacular morning views. Transfer to Nong Khiaw center and check into the beautiful Nong Khiaw Riverside Lodge for a night of comfort after “roughing it”. You’ll have time to explore the small town of Nong Khiaw, visit Phatok Cave with your guide for some interesting natural and historical attractions, and relax in the comfort of a riverside lodge. DAY 8: 1000 WATERFALL TREK (B, L)

Today you will start a relaxing local boat trip on the peaceful Nam Ou River in which you have chance to look closer to the little Lao villages along the green riverside. Do not forget to bring camera to take wonderful photograph. You will be really interested in the villager’s way of living along the Northern Laos River. You should get some knowledge about the local villagers before you get a breathtaking adventure of “100 Waterfalls Trail.” First found in October 2008, 100 Waterfalls are the extremely beautiful complexes. You will walk through the quite streams and beautiful rice paddies before set foot on natural masterpieces. When you’re there, commune with nature with only water, jungle, and songs of the cascades. While you’re closer to nature, the inviting clear pond urges you to soak in it. With the local professional guide’s support, we find it easy and safe to overcome the cascades. Hike back to the Nam Ou River for boat transfer to Ban Houay Goong, a traditional Khmu village in a stunning setting on the riverbanks where you will spend an overnight homestay.

DAY 9: NAN OU RIVER & MUONG NGOI EXPLORER (B, L)

After Breakfast, we’ll board a local boat headed upriver on the Nam Ou River to Muang Ngoi about 2 hours with a boat change in Nong Khiaw. Once in Muang Ngoi, check into the lovely Rattanavongsa Guest House and explore Muang Ngoi with an afternoon walk to Tam Gang Cave and Ban Naa village. Muang Ngoi is known for its remoteness and panoramic mountain scenery. You’ll have time to relax and explore the small town on your own and take in the scenery at your leisure for the evening. Overenight at Rattanavongsa Guest House.

DAY 10: MUONG NGOI - LUANG PRABANG (B, L)

After our breakfast we take a return boat from Muang Ngoi to Nong Khiaw and then a private minivan through beautiful mountain and river landscape to Luang Prabang. We’ll make a stop to visit to the famous Pak Ou Cave where we could have a look at confluence of the Mekong & Ou Rivers. Since the 16 century, the villagers built many thousands of Buddha images here. We also have chance to visit some more village at Ban Muangkeo, which is famous for its traditional Lao rice whisky distilling. Arrive in Luang Prabang in the late afternoon. 1.The weather & our latest advice on the weather

Light clothes regardless of the season in the south and centre but for the visiting of temples and pagodas, make sure you have a top with sleeves (shoulders must be covered) and bottoms going at least up to the knee.

  • May – Nov: 25°C to 35°C, Rainy season

  • To go to Laos you must have a valid passport valid at least 6 months after the date of return.
  • The Citizens of the following countries are also exempt from Laos visas: Vietnam ( 30 days), Brunei (14 days), Cambodia (30 days), Indonesia (30 days), Japan (15 days ), Luxembourg (15 days), Malaysia (30 days), Mongolia (30 days), Myanmar (14 days), Philippines (30 days), Singapore (30 days), Korea (15 days), Switzerland (15 days), Thailand (30 days) and Russia (30 days).

3.International flight

Our offer does not include international flights between your country and Laos for two reasons:

  • International flights from your country are more expensive if purchased in Vietnam or Laos. It is therefore more beneficial for you to buy them from a ticketing agency in your country.
  • The payment and booking conditions for international flights are strict while it is difficult for us, a local agency, to apply the same conditions to you (full payment before travel). Since international financial transactions give rise to significant bank charges, you will be led to pay unnecessary surcharges.

5.Cancellation Policy:

  • More than 30 days before arrival: no cancellation charge will be done (Client’s non-refundable deposit will be forfeited)

  • 10-13 days before arrival: 40% of the cost of the tour is forfeited
