Winding its way through the jungle-clad hills that divide northern Thailand and Laos, the Mekong River is an ancient trade and transport route that can tell thousands of stories. Guests can now follow these historic tales with a relaxing cruise in Luang Prabang. Visitting local hilltribes, allowing guests to experience a true taste traditional village life.

DAY 2: PAKBENG - OUDOMXAY (B, L)

Upon leaving Pakbeng, we begin our expedition, venturing into northern Laos. The roads conditions are very poor; however the verdant and rugged mountain scenery combined with the colorful local population makes for an unforgettable experience.
Today, we drive through the area, home to various ethnic minority groups including the Hmong, Khmu, Akha and Taidam,… some of whom we will meet on our wonderful adventure.

DAY 3: OUDOMXAY - MUONG LA - MUONG NGOY (B, L)

After breakfast, the journey leads us through the scenic area to Muong La. Here is a chance to visit Pra Xack Kham Temple with its sacred Buddha image. This 400 years old statue legendary possesses many supernatural powers which are widely worshipped among local people. After an enjoyable stop in Muong La, we continue our trip to Muong Khoua and board a traditional boat for a leisurely cruise on the Nam Ou River down to Muong Ngoy, our base for next trekking days. Overnight in Muong Ngoy.

DAY 4: MUONG NGOY - LUANG PRABANG (B, L)

Early morning, Board a traditional riverboat downstream the Nam Ou River towards Luang Prabang through stunning karstic landcapes. Picnic lunch on board. Continue towards Luang Prabang and arrive before sunset. Meet Upon arrival at the pier and transfer to hotel for check in.

DAY 5: LUANG PRABANG - PAK OU CAVES - OVERNIGHT ON BOARD (B, L, D)

Today, you will first visit Royal Palace Museum, which hosts a range of interesting artifacts. From there, we ascend the 329 steps to the top of Phousi Hill for the panoramic view of the city and the Mekong River. We then visit the Traditional Art and Ethnology Center to learn about Laos’ many ethnic cultures. Our next stop is the old temple of Wat Sene before visiting the nearby magnificent Wat Xiengthong with its roofs sweeping low to the ground, which represents classical Laotian architecture. Lunch is served at local restaurant. In the afternoon (around 1PM), we embark on the cruise upstream on the Mekong River, which also gives us a breathtaking view of the tranquil countryside, before reaching the mysterious Pak Ou Caves, two linked caves crammed with thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues of various shapes and sizes left by pilgrims. Along the way, we stop at the village of Ban Xanghai, where they make the local rice wine. At around 16h00PM, you come back to the boat to relax and having some snack while our staff set up the beach camp. You will then enjoy the romantic dinner on the sandy beach of Mekong River while listening to the sound of nature. Enjoy the luxury night on board

DAY 6: CRUISING SOUTH TO VISIT KUANG SI WATERFALLS (B, L)

Awake on board early today to admire the amazing sunrise over the Mekong River and mountains. After breakfast, we will take the cruise downstream the Mekong River back to Luang Prabang before continue southward to the authentic Lao village of Meuang Khai. Here we rendez-vous with private land transport followed by a short drive through the countryside to the former summer residence of Lao royalty at Kuang Si Falls. We will stop at the butterfly park exhibit nearby to tour the beautiful gardens before moving on to enjoy the turquoise pools and stunning waterfalls. Kuang Si also hosts the charming International Bear Rescue Centre.
Upon return to the boat we will moor for one hour at a quiet location for the lunch before returning to Luang Prabang. We will also make a short stop at Ock Pop Tock Living Craft Center, where we can have a short tour to learn more about traditional Lao silk and textile. Dinner on your own. Overnight at Luang Prabang

DAY 7: LUANG PRABANG – DEPARTURE (B)

After your breakfast in the hotel, depending on flight schedules, you will be transferred to Luang Prabang Airport by your driver and guide for your departure flight. Saying goodbye to Laos & Xuan Son Travel see you again.

Light clothes regardless of the season in the south and centre but for the visiting of temples and pagodas, make sure you have a top with sleeves (shoulders must be covered) and bottoms going at least up to the knee.
