1. Imperial Citadel of Thang Long
The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, is an intriguing relic of Vietnam’s history and, signifying its historical and cultural importance, was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. Also known as the Hanoi Citadel, many artefacts and items dating back to between the 6th and 20th centuries were excavated in 2004, including foundations of old palaces, ancient roads, ponds and wells. 2. Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre
The ancient art of water puppetry has long been associated with Hanoi. Watch as puppets dance elegantly – controlled by a whole troupe of puppet masters – telling a story of the famous Legend of the Restored Sword of King Le, which is about Hoan Kiem Lake and a giant tortoise. Traditional content of water puppet performance like daily life of Vietnamese farmers (cultivating, tending buffalo, catching fishes…), communal entertainment (swimming contest, dragon dancing…), or historical legends (Le Loi returns precious sword…), with modest performance way have appealed audiences for centuries. 3. Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

4. Hoan Kiem lake, Ngoc Son Temple

5. Dong Xuan market

Dong Xuan Market is the largest market in Hanoi. Four storeys high, you can find all sorts of apparel, electronic items and food. 9. Hoa Lo Prison

11. One Pillar Pagoda

This pagoda is built on a single wooden pillar that’s just 1.25 metres in diameter. The story goes that heirless emperor Ly Thai Tong dreamt that he met Quan The Am Bo Tat, the Goddess of Mercy. Soon after, he married a young peasant girl who gave him a son. The pagoda was built between 1028 and 1054 to express his gratitude to the goddess. Address: Đội Cấn, Hà Nội, 100000, Vietnam
12. St Joseph’s Cathedral

This was one of the first structures built by the French colonial government in Indochina. This is a narrow street in the Old quarter where train tracks running right down the middle allow trains to pass terrifyingly close to the houses. The daily life of the locals have to be packed up multiple times a day when a train is scheduled to pass.

The Hanoi ceramic mosaic mural is a mural on the wall of the dyke system of the city of Hanoi in Vietnam. The content of the mosaic contains decorative patterns of different periods in history of Vietnam. It has a length of about 4 km which is quite long. this is the reason why a lot of people visit here and it is also a nice attraction for the locals here.
17. Long Bien Bridge

The Long Bien Bridge is a historic cantilever bridge which connects the two famous districts in the city of Hanoi namely Hoan Kiem and Long Bien. It is around 1700 m in length and was opened long back in 1903 and is operational till now. There was some renovations conducted few years back to maintain the bridge for usage. Highlights: The bridge was built by architect Gustave Eiffel who is a notable architect and has build the bridge in a beautiful way. Currently, only half of the bridge remains in the actual shape that it was created back then. History: When the bridge was made, it was one of the longest bridges in Asia at that time. During the Vietnam war, the bridge was attacked a lot and had to go under heavy maintenance in order to become functional again.

HISTORY OF HANOI OLD QUARTER

The first chapter of Hanoi’s old quarter history was started in the 11th century when the King Ly Thai To, he decided to move the capital from Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh) to Thang Long (Hanoi). After this historical decision, many craftsmen gathered around the royal palace in order to sell their product. It lead to the establishment of the specialized villages of various types of product. In these villages, the skillful craftsmen with the same skills could cooperate conveniently and also made it easier to transport their products to different places. Hanoi’s Old Quarter development reached its peak under French colonial rule.

2. Xôi Xéo:
Chances are you will encounter this dish in almost every outdoors market. There are even two restaurants dedicated fully to this dish in the Old quarters. Xoi Xeo is sticky rice topped with ground de-hulled Mung bean and fried onion. Sometimes it can be served with eggs or steamed chicken breast on request. The serving is really filling and it is good for any time of the day but most Vietnamese have it for breakfast or lunch. Where to try: Xoi Yen is all time local favorite sitting just North of Sword Lake (Hoan Kiem lake) on Nguyen Huu Huan street. Ask anyone in the area and they all know what you are referring to. The price varies, without chicken, a bowl of Xoi Xeo costs you about 50 cents. Have it with a glass of soy milk and you have more energy boost than a box of granola bars!
3. Bánh cuốn:
If the French has this famous delicious crepe made of wheat, egg and dairy products; Vietnamese and particularly Hanoian is proud of their steamed crepe from rice flour and water. A savoury meal, the inside stuffing contains ground pork, wood-ear and seasoning. Most street chefs make the dish right at door so look for a place that steams are coming up high. Banh cuon is served with nuoc mam, a mixture of fish sauce, sugar and lime. Where to try: Banh cuon Gia An – Ba Trieu street (opposite to Vincom tower) is a more upscale restaurants specializing in Banh Cuon. The price is not that big a difference (about $1.5 for a serving) compared with other street vendors (about 50-70 cents). Banh cuon there is made without preservative and of high hygiene condition. You can ask for a vegetarian option as well.
4. Phở (Noodle soup):
This universally famous food is best enjoyed in Hanoi, where it was “invented” in the early 20th century. Pho- or rice noodle soup- is omnipresent in Hanoi, appearing anywhere from street vendors to high end restaurant chain Pho 24. Some is served with chicken and some with beef. Each type of meat entails a variety of sub-dish, using from beef tenderloin to beef brisket, chicken wing to chicken thigh. The tip is, look for the place where locals gather the most and you know where you should order and sit down. Where to try: Pho Bat Dan is a famous local restaurants famous for its pho bo (beef rice noodle soup). Located in the Old quarter “jungle”, the store easily stands out for the long line of people waiting to be served. You are highly recommended to join the local, line up for the pho bowl and bring it to a selected table to eat
5. Bún thang:
If Pho is compatible to linguine in shape, Bun is more like spaghetti. Bun thang is one of the most popular yet hidden fares in Hanoi and one can hardly find it outside of the Old quarters or a few special restaurants scattering across the city. The chicken broth is artistically done and the dish is beautifully served. Bun thang is a harmonious blend of color- the yellow of sliced egg; the white of bun; the off-white of chicken and the green of onions and herbs.
